April 3, 2006 Open Letter from Larry N. Johnson --
Chairman, Street and Safety Committee Safer Streets
Campaign
Concern: In the past period, vehicles were spotted
driving at excessive speed and in a careless manner.
Discussion:
All of us are concerned for safety. Some
particular drivers are blatantly careless.
The “speed bumps” do not solve the problem
regarding unsafe drivers; they only shock all our cars (making it more unsafe),
shock the road and adjacent homes, and shock the occupants regardless of how
slow they go over the bumps (hurts elderly people). The fast drivers, like
pickups made for bumpy roads, could care less about the bump; “faster is
smoother” seems to be their thinking. They also demonstrate defiance: “I’ll
show you” mentality.
The cure to safer streets will come about
several ways:
1.
Post speed limits more often. Like every two or three
blocks.
2.
Post under all of them “Slow, Children at Play”,
or “Caution – Pedestrians”
3.
Lighted signs may be
considered.
4.
Report unsafe drivers.
5.
Improve the road surface. (smoother, eliminate bumps and
pot-holes)
6.
Improve visibility.
7.
Public awareness campaign.
Implementation of
Item 4
Since funding will be needed on some of
these items, we need to approach with more information.
The
“Report Unsafe Drivers” campaign takes no money, just involvement.
1.
We
can distribute an “Unsafe Drivers Report” to all neighbors, particularly on
Saratoga
Drive.
2.
A
copy of a form we can use is here.
3.
Turn in reports for appropriate
action.
Thank
you fort your support; if we have 100% community support, the streets will
become safer!
Unsafe drivers have to be called out before a child is
injured or there is a fatality. Call or email me ASAP.
